ABOUT US
OUR VISION
To challenge the inequalities and injustice in the field of social work. Empower and build an emotional, resilient, confident, competent and strong practitioner.
OUR MISSION

The Network of Black British Social Workers (NBBSW) seeks to create a networking platform for Black British, Asian and Ethnic Minority Social Workers.

We believe this platform will create opportunities for networking with like minded people who share the same values, principles and beliefs around equality and diversity.
Giving back to society is our drive, we aim to represent a voice for the minorities who can not speak out; we believe we can never succeed if half of us are held back.
We owe our success to having respectfully listened to the very best advice and we are now aiming to raise each other up.
We hope to work in collaboration with National organisations such as BASW, Social Work England, International organisations and other appropriate groups. Our aim is not to cause division rather to uphold the social work professional ethics and code of conduct as regulated by Social Work England.
NBBSW will continue to leverage its collective expertise to strategically develop capacity of people of Black, Asian and Ethnic minority to flourish.

OUR STORY

NBBSW consist of people of Black, Asian and Ethnic minorities. Opportunities are often missed because of fear, not being able to stand up and challenge the social injustice that occurs in practice.

Everyone has a story to tell, some are filled with triumph and jubilation.
We consider ourselves as successful in our careers but this came through a lot of tears and achievement. Instead of being aided to succeed based on merit, we had to invest twice if not three times to be given the opportunity to excel in our career. I guess it is good to share our lived experience in our career journey. We are a proud group of social workers, we share the same vision and our stories, although not similar, they do share a common underlying meaning.

We have experienced some form of injustice that has gone unchallenged or that continues to be ignored or deemed as the "norm".

There were times when we felt paralyzed, we felt disempowered, under-valued and not respected as a human being and as a professional.
The experience has been scary and daunting. Rising up againstinjustice and fighting racism is definitely not a "one man race". There is comfort in numbers. It takes an army to fight a war.
Our organisation ethos believes that as a group of social workers we can stand united and develop meaningful relationships to lobby and address the issues around subtle racism, inequality and the social injustice that we face in our work place. We know it is almost impossible to provide evidence when it comes to subtle racism.

This is our time to make history, speak with one voice and share our story about some of the unspoken acts of racism, inequality and injustice that is taking place. We spend time advocating for our service users but how can we be self content when you can not stand up and speak out for your own rights/for your views and voice to be heard.
We are human, we have a part to play and should be treated without prejudice.
CODE OF ETHICS

We uphold the ethics and values as stipulated in the Social Work England Professional Standars 4.8.

Network of Black British Social Workers facilitates a professional network for social workers in the United Kingdom (UK) to stay connected and help inspire and support each other. The Code of Ethics states the values and ethical principles on which the profession is based. The Network has a duty to ensure as far as possible that its members discharge their ethical obligations and are afforded the professional rights necessary for the safeguarding and promotion of the rights of people who use social work services. Social work is based on respect for the inherent worth and dignity of all people as expressed in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and other related UN declarations on rights and the conventions derived from those declarations.
