Striking the balance or tipping the scale?

There is much debate regarding the Commission report on race and ethnicity issued in March 2021.

These are some of the comments that strikes me;

“ Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Dr Sewell said while there was anecdotal evidence of racism, there was no proof that there was "institutional racism" in Britain.

"No-one denies and no-one is saying racism doesn't exist", he said.

"We found anecdotal evidence of this. However, evidence of actual institutional racism? No, that wasn't there, we didn't find that."

Dr Sewell added that the term "institutional racism" is "sometimes wrongly applied" as a "sort of a catch-all phrase for micro-aggressions or acts of racial abuse".

In this report there is very little limelight on social work yet this is a profession where institutional racism continues to exist.

Social workers are well known for acting as advocates but who is advocating for the advocate?

It seems right for us to stand up and speak out about the naked truth about racism that is happening in social work. Most people have experienced racism, but as an individual it is hard to stand up and fight a system where there is little support to help you fight your cause. These are just my views but l would like to invite thoughts and comments around:

  1. What do we think about this report?

  2. What does the report say about addressing the bottle neck in leadership especially for competent and potential black, asian and ethnic minorities?

  3. What are the implications for children, young people and adults  of black, asian and ethnic minorities who are in receipt of services from children or adults services?

  4. What could be done to bridge the gap?
